DID YOU HAVE ANY CHILDHOOD DREAM:
I believe my childhood dream was superimposed on me by my surroundings. As a young child I always wanted to be a teacher. However, at university I ended up studying Geology and Computer Science. The dream of being a teacher somehow vanished. On other hand, my intuitive dream had always been there since my childhood but I never realized that earlier on. I have always been crafty and stylish since I was a young girl, learning to crochet when I was 11 years old. My late mother who passed away when I was 13 years old used to buy baking ingredients so I could make our local pastry called vetkoek. These I will then sell during weekends and school holidays to generate my own pocket money. We go through the motions of life without fully realizing our potential for greatness; we might even go through the day to day from one action to the next without honest reflection and examination of the meaning of these actions and how each experience shapes us. As I look back at my life, I am seeing these micro steps that I didn’t know were going to open doors for me in the future. The seed of craftsmanship and entrepreneur instilled in me when I was a child did expand into the following startup businesses that offers luxurious crochet and knit designs, photography, event planning and styling.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
I am inspired by anyone who is hardworking and trying to grow themselves and others. I also have an affinity to people who started with nothing and went on to owning businesses that benefit not just to themselves but the community at large. Hardworking women remind me that I too can do great things if I apply myself diligently.
My current work is creative oriented. I draw a lot of inspiration from my natural environment, publications, films, and travel. I occasionally follow trends however to keep my uniqueness, my work should always resemble the vision that I have set for the course.
HAVE YOU ACHIEVED ANY OF YOUR DREAMS?
Early this year, I decided to resign from my job as a Geologist and concentrate on my life passions. Crocheting, knitting, photography and decor styling which I have been doing in my spare time fills a larger part of my life. The only way I was truly to be satisfiedand thrive in my professional life was to fully embrace my God-given talent and do work that I believe is great and filling to my soul. Thus far I have been self-employed and I have opened my online shop for my handmade crochets and knits.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL STRENGTHS?
Resigning from my stable job meant adjusting my living style. Now that I don’t have a monthly salary, I have to tighten my belt. What I know for sure is this, it is an uncomfortable but it is a temporary situation. With hard work and perseverance, I have faith that I will be in place where I want my future self to be.
WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST CHALLENGED?
Generally, I feel challenged when my thoughts are all over. When I am in such a state, I get clumsy, I am distracted and I do less.
WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME?
When I am crocheting or knitting, everything is so peaceful and in a meditative state. Being on a hiking trail or on my yoga mat also makes me feel at home. I enjoy these times as they give me space to think and have conversation with myself. I also feel at home when I am in a company of like-minded or enriching people.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST SELF-CARE SECRET OR ROUTINE?
I have been practicing yoga for the past seven years. My yoga beginning was more on the physical asana poses I could do. However with time, my understanding of the practice deepened and the frequency of my practice increased. I have realized how yoga has greatly changed my life. Yoga has proven to me that there is more to myself that I still need to discover. I am more aware of my body as I listen to what my body tells me. Together with meditation I have found my antidote, my spirituality is awakened, I am more connected and my mind is quietened, I can de-stress after a practice; I am calmer, more energetic, stronger, positive and I sleep better. Through my practice I have also learn to eat better and be a better version of myself inside and outside. Furthermore, I am a regular mountain hiker, doing a 5 - 9 km every week; I dance and I am an avid reader.
DO YOU HAVE ANY DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE?
Many! For starters, I would like to live where my talents are going to thrive better than at present. I am working hard so my crochet and knitting brand grow internationally. I would love to enroll at a fashion and business school, consequently being recognized as a fashion designer and a businesswoman. My late aunt and I started the décor styling business to mostly help our family, I will continue to steer that vision. My commitment with yoga is for a lifetime, one day I would love to be a certified yoga instructor so I could share my understanding.
Overall, my true-self happiness is ultimately linked to relationships that I build, my vision is to always to make sure that I am headed in the direction and remain true to myself to build healthier relationships(s) with other.
